Rust marks on White paint

MessageAuthor

I have a two year old XC90 that has beautiful white paint. But - I am now seeing rust marks - mostly on the tailgate and the hood. My dealership say "Oh yeah, all the white vehicles have this, it's nothing. You should bring it in the spring to have them buffed away and a commercial wax applied." Granted, I am driving on (salty) Canadian roads, but should there be rust showing through the paint? Is it OK just to buff them? Will it work? Do other white vehicle owners have the same problem? Thanks.

The tailgate rusting can usually be down to the paint not being cured before the glass was installed or the paintwork being damaged during this process. I have absolutely no idea why the bonnet should be rusting though, as 4 forty suggest, this could be down to airbourne particles, such as train brake dust, which settles on top of the lacquer and appears like rust but can be removed without damaging the underlying paint. As the vehicle is only two years old I would expect your local dealer to sort it and if it is a more serious corrosion issue then use the paint warranty.
